Holidays being over and fair weather brought to you by the Goddess of Ritmo means it's time to step out and live!
A historic Presidential Inauguration is just around the corner, and since we can't be there in D.C., let's have a good time here in the Land of 1000 Dances.
This past weekend saw East L.A. music legend RUDY SALAS of TIERRA kicking up the chancla and partying hard with the good Gente de San Fernando as Rudy's wife JOANNA SALAS (former co-star of the THEE MR. DURAN SHOW) and former TIERRA lead singer ISSAC AVILA & his Lady Rachel threw a surprise 60th Birthday party for Rudy at Issac & Rachel's home in Sylmar. A good crowd enjoyed lot's of food, drink, and dancing, there was also live music provided by Issac & his band the PIRATES. Spotted among guests were Rudy Esquivel, Stevie Salas, Frankie Firme, and WAR's Sal Rodriguez. A very nice evening and a great way to start another decade of life. Happy Birthday, Rudy!
ÔÇªand speaking of the THEE MR. DURAN SHOW, the good news has it that the show will NOT be cancelled on cable/Internet TV, as they are not affiliated with Time~Warner cable as previously thought, and they will continue every Wednesday on www.mrduran.com, where star Richard Duran promises more music, more entertainment, and more fun for the Chicano audience de Aztlan.
Wednesday, January 14th sees LOUIE CRUZ BELTRAN & his Latin Jazz Ensemble rock the Sunset Strip at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood starting at 8 pm. For tickets & info: 323-466-2240 or go to www.louiecruzbeltran.com.
Friday, January 16th sees veteran Chicano comedy troop CULTURE CLASH celebrate their 25th anniversary at UC Riverside as they put on performances "Culture Clash in America" and "Chavez Ravine". Show starts at 8 pm, for tickets call (951) 827-4331.
Also on Friday, January 16th, so cool they can give you a chill, Louie Parra & the MAD LATINS BAND hits the stage in the San Gabriel Valley at Callahan's Irish Pub in Irwindale, starting at 9pm. For more info: 562-686-4952.
January 17th will be a bumping Saturday.
Starting in the morning, Gilbert Esquivel and G&R Entertainment will host the first "Welcome Home defenders of Freedom" celebration at the Pasadena Rose Bowl honoring all U.S. Military Veterans that will include festivities, food, refreshments, booths, and live performances by comedians Gilbert Esquivel, Rudy Moreno, Willie Barcena, Joey Medina, and Jeff Garcia, in addition to live stage performances by L.A. music heavy hitters WAR, TIERRA , and the JOHNNY POLANCO BAND. The Korean War, Viet Nam War, Afghanistan, and Iraq War Tribute Walls will also be on display. Admission is free.
Later that day, LOWRIDER magazine will do a photo-op with the San Fernando Valley's PACHUCO Car Club, culminating in a celebration dinner where the guest of honor will be yours truly, FRANKIE FIRME. (thanks, guys!)
Later on that night, Peter Jaramillo & the Whittier Radisson Hotel Club 201 present the "Recession Buster Dance & Concert", featuring live stage performances by SANGRIA, SUAVE, THE COMPANY BAND, HINDSIGHT, and KOOL BREEZE in addition to a "Back in Time" Disco DJ party. In the San Fernando Valley, BocaFloja, a hip-hop MC addressing social issues with music and poetry makes a live appearance along with MC Change and Luis M. Rodriguez at TIA CHUCHA's in Pacoima. January 26th sees Northern Califas kick it up as WAR & AZTECA team up in San Francisco at the Warfield Theater for the VOICES OF LATIN ROCK Concert. Also on hand will be the Voices of Latin Rock Revue, featuring members of Santana Band, Cold Blood, Malo, and El Chicano, along with a tribute to the Women of Latin Roc, ~featuring Sheila E., Lydia Pense, and others.
