Republicans in the Senate are holding up Congresswoman Hilda Solis' appointment as Secretary of Labor by the Senate. Even with one more Democrat to be seated in the Senate, the Republicans hold firm they have enough votes to parliamentarily delay.
Why leave the Republicans off the hook and why not call for more support for Solis everywhere!.
Do we want a slim victory or a big one?
More is at stake than only the nominee who deserves a unanimous approval right now, but also the national labor policy with big votes coming on labor rights, immigrant rights, and more. The bigger the vote for Solis the better!
The biggest GOP resistance to Obama's cabinet nominees has been to an African American man and a Latino woman. Solis would be one of the strongest voices for peace, a just foreign policy, environmental protection, women's rights and more. There has hardly been any mention in the corporate media of the block.
Their coverage focuses GOP opposition to her support for the Employee Free Choice act, but along with this is the overall racist, anti-Latina, anti-women, anti-immigrant, anti-peace obstructionism of the right wing Republicans, especially in the Senate.
I think pressure should be applied ASAP on Republican senators to endorse Solis personally right now; loads are up for reelection in 2010. For example John McCain of Arizona, Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, Baseball Hall of Famer Jim Bunning of Kentucky, and Lisa Murkowsky of Alaska, who was appointed by her father, and others. Also Sen Martinez of Fla who will resign and not run for reelection in 2010.
I think it would be good to praise Obama's support for Solis and increase our own support for Solis among organizations, elected officials, clergy leaders, but most importantly grassroots people. We should show support for Hilda in as many ways as we can.
Get everyone on Facebook, get peace groups, women's groups, labor group...
Build support for the policies and people she represents!
