News from the Brown Side of Town

Orale, mi Gente! Things still be happening in the Land of 1000 Dances‘«™some surprising, some expected, some disappointing‘«™pero, still happening!

Manny Ramirez got re-signed to the Dodgers, making more in one year playing baseball than what most Angelenos will ever make in a lifetime, after he found out not a lot of other teams had big multi-million $$ interests in him outside of L.A.

‘«™and now we know why we keep paying higher & higher prices for parking, Dodger dogs, and beer at Dodger Stadium‘«™.

Former East L.A. Car Clubber, MeCHA President, and State Assemblyman Antonio Villaraigosa got himself re-elected as Mayor of the City of Angels without a lot of sweat due to having more campaign money for commercials than any of the nine unheard of contenders he was opposed by‘«™but less than 1/3 of all eligible voters in L.A. turned out and voted, and Antonio got only 55% of that vote‘«™hmmm‘«™I think he has just enough time to save up some $$ to run for Governor in the next 4 years, 'cause L.A. is gonna see some tough times ahead that most Gente will probably blame him and his friends for, and home~boy cannot get elected for a 3rd term.

‘«™at least he's working‘«™?

Word is‘«™almost 5,000 jobs will be cut from L.A. City services , and my prayer is that Tony doesn't touch Police, Firefighters, Teachers, and Schools‘«™.but gets rid of all the overpaid bureaucrats, consultants, luxury executive jobs and committees and other grifters and parasites feeding off the City trough, does away with all the freebies (like cars, gas, travel, and housing subsidies) for his friends in City Hall, and quits squeezing the Gente, the DWP, and mom and pop businesses for every last dime with all kinds of new fees, taxes, bonds, and measures that never seem to pay for what they were raised for‘«™IF the homie ever expects ANY L.A. votes for his Governorship.

Hell‘«™if Manny leads L.A. to a World Series, I'll vote for HIM as Mayor, he can afford City budget all by himself, and we'll ALL be happy !

‘«™I know, I know‘«™cut down on the coffee at work, Frankie‘«™you're getting ahead of yourself! Ha!

But at least the Land of 1000 Dances has some palatable news we can sink our teeth into:

As expected, the San Fernando Valley Marine Corps League's Valentine's Day dinner & dance went off like precision clockwork. KELLY GALVAN & the KOOL KATZ , along with special guest performer PEPE MARQUEZ were simply off the chain, performing flawlessly and rocking the house for the Marines, their ladies and honored guests.

To follow up on the success of establishing a new home where fine celebrations occur, the SFV Marine Corps League will begin hosting monthly dances starting in April at the former Reseda American Legion Post, located at 7338 Canby Ave. in Reseda, themed "Friday Night at the Legion". April 17th sees one of the San Fernando's finest, BAG OF TRICKS, performing live on stage as the opening of what looks to be a promising new venue & spring season in the San Fernando Valley for dancing and merrymaking. For more info : 818-621-3920 or 818-599-2719. New shows will be announced as the time comes near.

TIERRA's new CD "On the Right Track" continues to do well in the Internet radio charts, as they have recently returned from a successful sold out concert in El Paso, Texas, and the CD spotlight show on www.djchentemrog.com/RADIOSHOW.htm, aka the LOST MEMORIES INTERNET RADIO STATION, and has received thousands of hits from across the country proving that TIERRA remains L.A.'s top Chicano Rock/R&B/SOUL band. For more info: www.tierramusic.com.

‘«™just for kicks, Rudy & Stevie Salas came back to the "old neighborhood" and jammed to a packed house at TEQUILA'S in East L.A. last Saturday night‘«™heard it was 'da bomb" for the East L.A. faithful!

Louie Parra and the MAD LATINS Band, coming off a successful fundraiser gig for kids and families of Colton at the Colton American Legion Hall, recently rocked the house just two weeks later at Schooner's in Colton, joined by Chicano music star ROCKY PADILLA, where a lucky and enthusiastic crowd partied the night away to some fine music & food. The MAD LATINS plan on coming back out west to the City of Angels soon, and you will hear about it first here on LatinoLA. For more info about this great band: TheMadLatins@msn.com or call 562-686-4952, and tell 'em you heard it from Frankie Firme.

If you like blues, and you missed the recent BLUES STRAIGHT UP & FRIENDS show at the Baldwin Park American Legion Hall two weeks ago, you missed a good one. The BLUES STRAIGHT UP band is back up and running fine, featuring the tantalizing vocals of LAVA GONZALEZ and coming to your town soon. For more info: www.bluesstraightup.com.

And speaking of the blues, Steve's Bar-B-Q in Whittier still puts out the best bar-b-q and live blues music every weekend. No cover charge, free parking, and a great atmosphere on Whittier's fabled Uptown Greenleaf strip. Last week saw the SOUTHBOUND 57 Blues/Latin Soul band take it up a notch, and the party was on!. For more info: www.stevesbarbq.com or call (562) 789-0200.

Although the bad news about the Commerce Casino cutting out live bands for dancing action has filtered out, the laughs & good times can still be had there every Thursday night where RUDY MORENO & the JOKERS CLUB still holds court with top comedians and hot DJ action for dance action . Good food, drinking, gambling, dancing, and great entertainment, right here, in the City of Angels! For more info: www.rudymoreno.com or call 323-721-2100.

The tempting sounds of the TEMPTATIONS and the DELFONICS are coming to the Whittier RADISSON HOTEL Grand Ballroom on March 13th for a live, MOTOWN tribute show guaranteed to bring out that good old feeling. One of the best live tribute shows in the Country! Show starts at 9:oopm , and tickets are only $15.00. For more info: www.jegrp.com. Things are ALWAYS happening at the Whittier Radisson!!

Nick Chico and the BACKTRAXX band hit the stage this Friday at MAGGIE's PUB in Santa Fe Springs for a night of dancing and partying. BACKTRAXX is one hot group of rockin' homies from East L.A. that you just gotta catch in action, and they will also be coming to the San Fernando Valley soon. For more info: nfchico86@msn.com.

SOTO, one of L.A.'s top Latin Soul bands recently returned from a successful overseas concert tour that included the Island of Guam where they entertained U.S. troops. They rocked it hard at Steven's Steakhouse last week upon returning, and are ready for action back in the Land of 1000 Dances. For info on upcoming gigs: www.sotoband.com .

The COMPANY BAND, SFV's reigning music veteranos, featuring the lovely and talented BECKY CORDOVA, return to the Land of 1000 Dances and cook it up hot and heavy this Friday at the Sixty-25 Club in Tarzana, Don Cuco's in Canyon Country on Saturday, and Sunday at the Sante Fe Springs Swap Meet, where for only $1.50 admission with free parking, good music, good food, good deals, and good people are all in one spot. For more info: www.thecompanyband-tcb.com or www.santafespringsswapmeet.net.

On a sad note, we regret to inform that the C.A.B.E. event in Long Beach last Saturday featuring the SATISFACTION Band had to unceremoniously partially canceled and downgraded at the last minute.

We at LatinoLA proudly support any and all artistic, cultural, and community events that benefit the community, especially children, and I humbly join the SATISFACTION Band and the C.A.B.E. organization in apologizing to a faithful and supportive public who showed up and were disappointed.

As always, the best music on Internet Radio can be found at: www.djchentemrog.com/RADIOSHOW.htm www.djchentemrog.com/RADIOSHOW.htm, eastLArevue.com , and Chicanoexpress.com.

Check out our calendar page here on LatinoLA and submit your events FREE!

We reach more Latinos on the west coast and southwestern United States than any other Latino web magazine in Aztlan! We also have a large following overseas...so we GOTTA be doing something right!

Ay te watcho, from the Land of 1000 Dances,
