On the Right Track

Like my homie, Al Carlos Hernandez up in Oakland is fond of saying: " Ride it like you stole it!" when describing the total joy of riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

I find myself feeling the same sense of exhilaration as I drive out of the crowded confines of L.A. proper on a surprisingly uncrowded L.A. freeway this afternoon...while jammin' TIERRA's new CD "On the right track" on a beautiful L.A. afternoon.

The title track, with lead vocals by Rudy Salas, is an inspiring song of life on the Brown side that many guys can relate to, especially if you're experienced any success in life after a struggle. Along with Rudy's strong lead vocals, the unmistakable kick-butt TIERRA brass, percussion, and powerful group harmony lets you know you're in for a great musical ride...TIERRA style!

This CD, featuring lead vocals shared by Rudy Salas, Steve Salas, Billy Mondragon and Victor Cisneros, is one of their better works, going easily and seamlessly through the many musical genres that TIERRA has effortlessly made their own over the past 35 years, keeping them in the big leagues.

Bringing back some happy memories of L.A.'s Chicano Movement, Steve's rendition "Tiempo por un cambio/Time for a change" is an upbeat Chicano-Latin Soul tune reminiscent of EL CHICANO's inspiring tunes from back in the day, but with Steve putting in some work as lead vocalist, backed up by some fine harmony from the guys.

Of course, who doesn't love a cumbia, and TIERRA gives you "Cumbia del sol", East L.A. style, getting that "shake the shoulders & booty" mood flowing easily.

Always known as a crooner. Steve delivers a heart-rendering ballad with "Angel of my dreams," bringing out the bittersweet feelings of love and loss that only a good woman can cause in a man's heart.

"Mi Gente" is a great tribute and honor to ALL the Latino people around the World, and TIERRA hits every brown corner you can think of, while hittin' it salsa style, making it unique with that powerful unique TIERRA brass section known around the World, with guest performances by SAL RODRIGUEZ of WAR, and the guys from MALO.

One of the "recorded live" songs on the CD, an oldies medley, is performed flawlessly by Billy Mondragon at lead vocals, and again, the unmistakable harmonious blend of male voice chorus that shows off the further talents of one of L.A'.s (and mine) all-time favorite Chicano music legends ...TIERRA.

Rudy & Steve show of their harmony, soul, and jam skills in the James Brown tribute song "Mr. James Brown", which I think is one of more jumpin' tunes on the CD. This is Salas Brothers vocal harmony at its best.

This new CD has 13 power packed and mellow jams for your dancing, loving, and listening pleasure, and is currently being spotlighted on the LOST MEMORIES Internet Radio Station at: www.djchentemrog.com/RADIOSHOW.htm, where info on how to score on this great new music treasure is available 24/7 .

I could go on describing this masterpiece of Chicano music...but I won't !

I'm always in awe of the humility and respect for others the ultra-talented band members always show for others, and it should come as no surprise that when I asked both the Salas brothers separately what it was like to put out another great creative piece of music work. They both smiled and said " Hey, Frankie....we're just having fun, man!"

Get your own copy now! You won't regret it! Wouldn't surprise me if this baby gets a GRAMMY nomination!

Siempre en musica con tigo,

Frankie Firme
