The Marines Get Some Satisfaction

Once again, the Goddess of Ritmo brings out the best in dancing and romancing in the Land of 1000 Dances, and yours truly was once again fortunate to have been in the mix.

This past Friday saw L.A.'s ever popular and powerful SATISFACTION Band join hands with the San Fernando Valley's Marine Corps League to bring about another successful "Friday night at the Legion" dance/concert that had many folks nursing happy sore feet on a Saturday morning, despite an economy that has many of us buying generic tortillas and making our own coffee a home in the morning. (sorry, Starbucks!)

"This Friday was kind of rough not just because of the economy, but because many other talented bands and venues are now giving the people what they want in affordable local entertainment , and the competition is getting people out there to enjoy this. Besides the heavy hitters in L.A. like Peter Jaramillo's Whittier Radisson Hotel, showcasing international Salsa queen SUSIE HANSEN (for FREE!) ,we also had to compete in the Valley with the BAG OF TRICKS band performing at the San Fernando American Legion Hall, the SIDETRACS band performing at Monty's Steakhouse, the BROTHERHOOD band performing at the PRESIDENTE, and San Fernando's music veteranos, The COMPANY Band, drawing people out of the Valley to get down at BRUCE's in Norwalk," SFV Marine Corps League Commandant Bennie Najar Jr. says.

"It's safe to say that nobody's really pulling in big gate crowds right now, but the decent-sized crowds that do step out want good entertainment for their money, so getting good talent is important. We've been lucky to get some of the San Fernando Valley's and L.A.'s best so far. We had LOUIE PARRA & the MAD LATINS two weeks ago to rock the house solid, and tonight, we had one of L.A.'s best, SATISFACTION, come out and give us a 110% perfect performance that has to be one of the best we've had so far."

Indeed, being fortunate not only to be a member in good standing of the SFV Marine Corps League, and personal friends of the SATISFACTION Band, I was also honored to have served as host & MC for the event , once again sharing a stage with one of the current top bands in the Land of 1000 Dances.

Of course, SATISFACTION needs no introduction as they have entertained audiences up and down southern California for many, many years with their heavy hitting performance and creative soul style that has many asking me for the past seven years "What's so great about SATISFACTION?".

My friends, you have only to catch one of their performances to answer that question, and the answer is evident.

Having opened for such music greats as TIERRA and JOE BATAAN, and competed in the L.A. Chicano music arena on a talent level with such popular Los Angeles names as SOTO, BALANCE, SANGRIA, DOWN WITH 3, ROCKY PADILLA, The COMPANY Band, and most recently, BARELA, SATISFACTION is probably one of the best cover bands on the scene right now, having honed their skills over the past 20 years or so during hundreds of performances and thousands of hours in rehearsal, which proves why they are in such demand...and draw such good-natured and respectful envy from fellow musicians....THEY'RE GOOD !

As most out of the area bands have discovered, the adult L.A. dance/party audiences want EVERYTHING! We want Oldies, Rock & Roll, Cumbias, Disco, Funk, Tex~Mex, Latin Rock & Soul, Rancheras, Soul, and classic R & B if you ever expect a second gig in the Land of 1000 Dances, and SATISFACTION delivers, time and again.

"These guys were really, really good," SFV Marine Corps League Vice Commandant Fred Flores commented after the show, "I was dancing my ass off tonight and having a good time....we gotta have these guys back again."

Indeed, the masterful combination of lead singer & band co-leader Robert Benavides, glass shattering vocals by Ms. Andrea Guerrero, eye-opening and animated guitar performance & back up vocals by Chris "Lil' Santana" Reserva, hot popping percussion, saxophone & back up vocals by brother Viet Nam Vet Jimmy Silva, magical fingers at work by keyboardist John Chavez, smooth "carpet laying" bass & back up vocals by Edgar Salas, and hot poppin', booty shaking, rock-yer-soul drums and back up vocals by Ralph Orosco III give you the ultimate in....of course...SATISFACTION!

"Man! People missed a good show and a good time tonight!" Marine Corps League member Edmund "Mundo" Chavez said. "I don't know what it's gonna take to get people out here and fighting this recession, but how can you just stay home when here we got FREE parking, only $10.00 admission, ice cold beer and drinks at half the price of most clubs, GREAT entertainment, affordable good food, raffles & door prizes, a great crowd, and a clean and air conditioned atmosphere with NO security problems."

As the SATISFACTION band went through their paces for three strong sets, all eyes were on one of the best, as the guys and gal performed their hearts out for the Marines....and made many new friends & fans on this night.

"I really had fun performing for the Marines tonight, and I felt honored they would invite us. It's such a blessing to make people happy, and to get them dancing and partying to our music during these tough times," lead singer Robert Benavides said after the show. As expected, Robert "wowed" the crowd with his stage antics, humor, dancing, and of course, his exceptionally fine singing voice he has become known for.

"It's really an honor being here tonight, and I personally want to thank all you guys that have served our country, for inviting us, and for giving us the freedom to have and enjoy shows like this," vocalist Andrea Guerrero said before launching into one of the more eye opening versions of Chaka Khan's classic "Sweet thing" you ever heard, with even band members exchanging smiles of approval as Andrea hit them high notes that could shatter glass. VERY impressive !

...VERY satisfying!

Future "Friday Night at the Legion" shows coming up include the return of BAG OF TRICKS, and performances by the ANTHONY PRIETO Band, The COMPANY Band, and the SOUL PURSUIT Band.
