Spanglish 101, the new CD from Kool Arrow Records in Monterey Park, has a lot of hardcore Latino artists armed and ready to make you bob your head and jump into the mosh pit. Unlike many compilations, all 17 tracks on this CD are good enough to stand on their own.
One of my favorite rap groups and the pride of Mexico is Control Machete. The song that they contribute to this effort is a combination of phat beats and rockin' metal. Their cut, Justo N, just jumps out of the speakers and punishes the ears. I was glad to see them representing on this compilation, which is heavy with U.S.-based artists.
Chicle Atomico ? an all-female group ? begin their song with an honest analysis of radio airplay today: "Siempre escucho la misma en el radio." With such a strong message in the beginning of the song, it was a relief that the rest of the song 'Generation Mex', with it's squealing guitar and catchy phrasing, didn't lose its steam.
'Born Again' by Announcing Predictions is one of the only all English tracks on the CD. The smooth sound of the lead female singer comes together with the stinging guitar. The heaviest and most likely to bring down the house is the group Brujeria. The group comes with strong metal music with a powerful lead singer.
The group Puya, fresh off the "Watcha Tour", delivers a song that is a mixture of punk and smooth Spanish rock. The song begins with a fast paced drum and guitar and then slows down then goes back to fast, adding spice and salsa. Puya will definitely show people that they will hit the charts soon. The only total rap song is by 7 notas 7 colores. The beat is hyped and the lyrics are good enough to keep you on the dance floor.
The last but definitely not the least impressive is Los Angeles' pride and joy, Aztlan Underground. Their classic mixture of metal and rap has kept the ears of East Los open for years. Their song "Lyrical Drive By" is a call to all Chicanos to check themselves or face the wrath of the poisonous pen.
This CD will move you physically and mentally.
On a scale of one to five Jalape?os, with five Jalape?os being the best, I give it a 3.
