Tropico de Nopal Gallery-Art Space is proud to present the Calavera Fashion Show & Walking Altars event as part of its Ofrendas 2009 Dia de los Muertos Celebration. Now in its seventh year, the Calavera Fashion Show has become one of the most exciting and unique Dia de los Muertos events in the City of Los Angeles. An idea conceived at Tropico de Nopal by its founder-director Reyes Rodriguez in 2003, it has evolved from its humble beginnings of showcasing "Calavera" outfits to a multi-disciplinary event that weaves together fashion, art, music and performance.
The fashions are created by visual artists in honor of a loved one, an historical figure or even a social cause or historical event. As Reyes said when the idea first came to life: "We Believe that these events at Tropico de Nopal forever transform the couture for the deceased, thus generating the utmost Ofrenda."
This year's participating artists are (in alphabetical order) Abel Alejandre, Edith Abeyta, Rosanna Arhens Miguel Barragan, Joe Bravo, Consuelo Flores, Juana Flores, Linda Gamboa, Daniel Gonzalez, Cici Segura Gonzalez, Rebeca Guerrero, Marialice Jacob, Jose Lozano, Poli Marichal Stephanie Mercado Reyes Jennifer Gutierrez Morgan, Lilia Ramirez, Marianne Sadowski, Robert Quijada, Orquidia Violeta and J Michael Walker.
The evening's MC is radio personality Rick Nuhn. Bay Area dj Jose Ruiz of MundoMuzik will provide the score for the fashion show and dance music for the remainder of the evening. Set design by Reyes Rodriguez. Set panting by Arturo Ernesto Romo-Santillano. Set Lighting by Luis Guizar.
