The Business/Art Incubator hosted by Ben Caldwell of KAOS Network is a collective of artists, residents and local merchants that have come together to develop the first art walk around the community drum circle in the Leimert Park Village along 43rd Place on Sunday, June 27th, 12 pm- 10 pm.
"Leimert Park Village is a community that is richly cultural and vibrant. On any day of the week there is jazz, African-style rhythms echoing throughout its streets, while Afro-Caribbean style combat dancers practice in the park. Where children run about weaving through Master drummers like Najite, and a casual audience who will occasionally stand from their reclined positions to dance, feeling the sounds - almost entranced by the beats," said Ben Caldwell.
Throughout the day cultural spaces (KAOS Network, Vision Theatre, World Theatre), artist studios and storefronts will share art exhibitions, music, fashion, food, drumming, spoken word and local shopping. Additional offerings range from free computer seminars, and specialty vendors to film screenings, and youth theater performances.
The Leimert Park Art Walk will open the day at noon with an African Drum procession led by Najite and Sister Rene. Noted artists whose work will be on exhibit are Mark Bradford, Kymberly S. Newberry CCH Pounder, Joe Ray, Charles Dickson, and Greg Pitts . Confirmed musical performances by jazz artists Derf, MAIA and Val Ewell, African Drumming by Najite and Sister Rene. And spoken word presented by, DJ ABF, Jimetta Rose, Legacy, and poet Tamara Blue.
The collective known as the "Business/Art Incubator meet each week to discuss the possibility of building alliances between artists, business and residents to create a more healthy and sustainable community.
