Ayer Con Cesar Chavez

Ayer Con Cesar Chavez

3/28/03, 9 am, morning after last night's
poetry reading at Luna's Cafe, Sacras, Califas,
honoring Cesar Chavez,

morning wind sweeps through trees,
strong breath of eagle wings,

las palabras de ayer
vibrate en mis ojos, corazon,

wander the caves
where los huesos rest,

depues los a?os
llenos con luchas,

Si Se Puede rings in my ears,
otra huelga here in this coffee shop where I sit,

spirit marchers surrounding las mesas,
brown fists slicing the air,

I look around,
wonder why no one notices
this wild sue?o,

no one calls si se puede,
pero they don't see,
maybe they are ciego,

hear nothing de los files
y opresion,

the sound of their salad es silencio,
blood of tomatoes,
is now sangre seca,

agricultural corporations
are masters of disguise,

someone cleans a table with spray,
I smell pesticide dropping from winged bombers,

rain of approaching death,
I whisper a quick prayer para los ni?os,

los ni?os that never grew
and generations swimming in misty swamps,

we dream of Cesar,
search for his face,
sonrisa fuerte,
embraced by el pueblo,

maybe if we return to Luna's,
we will find him,

to los files,
where his strong spirit
watches out por la gente,

we find him in this recuerdo,
donde cantamos his cumplea?os,
De Colores, De Colores,

Cesar, tu eres los colores
de nosotros.
