Late Tuesday evening, December 7, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced that a vote on the DREAM Act will take place Wednesday December 8th. The Senate is tentatively scheduled to vote on the measure late Wednesday. The following is a statement from Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum and Chair of the Reform Immigration FOR America campaign.
"For more than a year the Reform Immigration FOR America has been urging, calling, emailing, faxing and pushing Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. The DREAM Act is an integral part of comprehensive immigration reform and it has a real chance to pass tomorrow. Congress should do the right thing and pass legislation that makes economic sense, that reduces our deficit, strengthens our armed forces and enriches our workforce.
This is common sense legislation whose supporters are as diverse as America. It's supported by the military, educators, labor, business, people of all faiths, and patriotic Americans from both parties. The DREAM Act is a sensible approach to remedy the immigration status of high achieving young people who arrived in America as children but remain stuck in our broken immigration system. They are American in every way except on paper, and it's time we let them live their American dream.
The lives of millions of young people and the future of our country are at stake. Every member of Congress, Democrat or Republican, should vote yes on this bipartisan, fiscally responsible legislation. The time for hiding behind excuses is over. Our movement has worked tirelessly to arrive at this historic moment, and tomorrow, we will know and remember exactly where every member of Congress stands on the future of immigrants in America
