Pacifico Dance Company, a non-profit organization and acclaimed dance ensemble in Southern California, presents a special performance on Saturday, April 30 to celebrate the tradition of D?¡a de los Ni??os (Children's Day), as they bring to life the dances that embody the culture and traditions of Mexico. In addition to celebrating children, the group will be showcasing the premier of two new works: Mictlan and Danzas y Chilenas Coste??as. This is the organization's annual fundraiser to help the group continue its mission of fomenting the arts through dance.
In the new production Mictlan, Pacifico explores age-old indigenous traditions and dives into the magical realm of Aztec mythology and its influence on Mexican history. Along with suites from various regions of Mexico, the program offers an exciting glimpse into the country's cultural treasures from the past, present, and the afterlife. To celebrate children, there will also be a special "live" display in the lobby with 10-12 children dressed in traditional folklorico outfits. Children attending the performance are encouraged to come dressed in outfits celebrating their heritage.
"Pacifico began with the mission of teaching classical ballet techniques along with the folkloric roots of traditional Mexican dance. We feel it is important that children of all ages are exposed to the arts, especially dance, as a way of expression and cultural pride. We are thrilled to be sharing our dances on such a special day," stated Adriana Gainey, artistic director of Pacifico Dance Co.
Thrilling audiences since its 1992 inception, California's premier Mexican ensemble has brought color, vigor, and skilled movement to theaters nationwide and overseas with an unique cast of more than 30 accomplished dancers and accompanying musicians. Widely celebrated for its vibrant repertoire merging Classical Ballet techniques with the Folkloric roots of traditional Mexican dance, Pacifico Dance Company's mission is to promote awareness and appreciation of Mexico's rich history and legacy. The organization focuses on preserving age-old works as well as developing original and innovative choreography that tests the boundaries of Folk dance.
The ensemble's artistic director, Adriana Astorga-Gainey, began her dance training at a young age in Mexico City at the Escuela del Ballet Folkl??rico. She has worked with numerous dance legends, including Modern dance masters Karen McDonald, Don Bondi and Davinci Burks; Latin American choreographer Rudy P?®rez; Ballet teacher and choreographer Joanna DiGiovanni.
