Some call it a cross between Star Search and Friday Night at the Apollo with a twist of Def Poetry. Urban Graffiti slam events feature talent from many genres, including actors, musicians, poets, spoken word artists, traditional artists, and photographers.
These event slams are competitions of the highest quality and are set in a festival environment complete with street vendors, live music, art, food and beverages that effectively create a unique venue. Urban Graffiti Spring Slam, taking place on May 31, will also feature a photo exhibit titled ?48 Hours in Boyle Heights? from the Caja Negra Collective photo group out of East Los Angeles. Urban Graffiti hosts audiences ranging from 800-1000 which includes many of the entertainment industries most influential decision-makers. This all day event is produced and filmed as a pitch pilot for television.
The event produced by Boricua Films, a production company spear headed by the "Boricua Brothers" David and Erik Llauger-Meiselman. Also on the project as producers are Jade DeCosta and Henry K. Priest.
Urban Graffiti is a slam showcase in a tournament format with four preliminary rounds of competition. This format pits acting scene versus acting scene, monologue versus monologue and spoken word versus spoken word. Each round will consist of 15 acts in three categories: 5 minute SPOKEN WORD poetry, 5 minute two person acting SCENES and 3 minute MONOLOGUES. Professionals and celebrities in the entertainment industry will judge all acts. After each round judges will chose one winner in each category to participate in the final evening showcase. The audience will also chose one wild card per round to participate in the evening showcase. In the final showcase our judges will chose our Urban Graffiti Slam Competition winners in each category. An award for outstanding original material will also be presented. Winners in each category will receive cash prizes from the event sponsors.
Awards to be given are:Best Spoken Word Performance; Best Monologue Performance; Best Two Person Scene Performance; and Best Original Written Material.
Urban Graffiti showcases the talent of outstanding actors and spoken word artists. All competitors have been prescreened through our extensive audition process to insure the best possible representation of talent in the industry.
Many of the spoken word artists participating in Urban Graffiti have established themselves as outstanding poets. A few of our participants have won national spoken word slam competitions. Some competitors competing in our events have been featured on the HBO special Def Poetry.
Urban Graffiti 3 is hosted by Shihan Vanclief of ?The Poetry Lounge?. Shijan has established himself as a well-known and respected advocate of spoken word poetry in Los Angeles. His credibility in the spoken world arena has earned him many accolades. He is currently the national talent coordinator for Russel Simmons? Def Poetry ? on the HBO channel.
Our judges have been carefully selected to represent all aspects of the film industry and the world of poetry as well. After careful selection we have secured our judges to create a panel that will add credibility to our event by developing a panel of industry professionals who know what to look for in talent and performance. Acts are judged by performance of their material. Original material is encouraged from our talent as we hope to showcase their creative writing skills as well.
