There will be no more George Lopez on late night TV. TBS has decided to pull the the Lopez Tonight talk show off the air as of tomorrow night.
It seems plans to cancel the show have been surfacing since last year, when the Lopez Tonight show was bumped to a midnight slot to make room for Conan O'Brian's Conan. At the time, the show seemed to be struggling in the ratings, however the rumor is that Conan did not want it cancelled then, so as to not appear as if the Anglo guy pushed the Latino off the air.
The two season run for Lopez Tonight ends tomorrow night and the reason given for the cancellation is, of course, ratings. The show has been averaging 400,00 viewers and a 0.2 in the 18-49 age range. Less than a year into production, Lopez Tonight TBS moved the show to a midnight time slot to accommodate Conan. Creatively, TBS is also rumored to have tried to make the show less ethnic. Whether this move affected ratings negatively is not known.
The official statement by TBS: "TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of Lopez Tonight. Thursday will be the final episode of the show. We are proud to have partnered with George Lopez, who is an immensely talented comedian and entertainer. TBS has valued its partnership with George and appreciates all of his work on behalf of the network, both on and off the air."
